About the place
The neglect of Mannur, a tiny village on the banks of the Bheema
in Afzalpur taluk, which was known as Manipuri, is an example of how the people
of the State have been deprived of an opportunity to know its history. During
the reign of Vikramaditya of the Kalyan Chalukya Dynasty, Mannur was a famous
cultural and commercial centre. It was also an important educational centre
with many scholars making Mannur as their home in the pursuit of knowledge and
excellence in the field of literature.
Mannur had an "Agrahara" where Vyakarna, Astrology,
Tarka, Nyaya, Vedanta, and other subjects were taught. Though several
inscriptions have been unearthed in the village, no effort has been made to
study them. The village is an important Madhwa centre, and people visit the
Brindavan of Madhava Theertha, Vedesh Theertha and Tangalodeyaru at Uttaradi
Math on the banks of the Bheema every year during the Aradhana festival. Mannur
is also famous for its Chennakeshava Temple, which has a history of 1,000
years. The temple, which has many damaged sculptures, is in a dilapidated
condition. An idol of Chennakeshava, which was installed during the reign of
Vikramadiya, is a masterpiece.
Mannur is on the banks of
river Bheema in Afzalpur taluk of Gulbarga district. Mannur today is a small
village 65 kms from Gulbarga and there are buses to this place from Afzalpur
(29 kms) and Gulbarga . Bangalore is almost 510 kms away. The
Paduke of mahwa theertha, he wore are still there in Mannur. Apart from his
brindavana, Mannur is home to brindavanas of several other Madhwa saints such
as Vedesha Theertha. Two Madhwa saints-Yadavaryaru and Govinda Odeyaru spent
time here.
