GURU RAGHAVENDRA STOTRA - PART 1


Sri Raghavendro hari pada kancha ,
NIshevann labdha samastha sampath,
Deva swabhavo divija dhrumo,
Ayam ishta pradho me sathatham sa bhooyath.                                                            4

samastha sampath – all riches *
Deva swabhavo – divine nature
divija – divine
dhrumo - tree
Ayam – he (raghavendra just like Kalpavriksha gives everything his devotee desires)
ishta pradho – giving one’s desire
me – me
Sathatham sa bhooyath – may he always be                                                           

Sri Raghavendra devoted to the feet of Narayana,
Who serves him with all the assets that he has,
Who is god like, who is  similar to the wish giving tree,
Would bless me with all my wishes always.

 * In the Bhagavath Gita, at the begging of chapter 16, an outline of what is “deva svabhava” (divine nature), and äsura svabhava” (demonic nature) is outlined. These are:
1.     Abhayam – absence of fear
2.     Sattvaasamshuddhi – full composure of mind
3.     Daanam- donating money to good cause
4.     Dama – control over sense organs
5.     Yajna – worship to devata’s
6.     Svaadhyaya – study (of vedas)
7.     Tapa – penance
8.     Aarjavam – agreement between mind and action (you don’t say one thing and do another)
9.     Ahimsa- non violence
10. Satyam – truthfulness
11. Shanthi – peacefulness
12. Apaishunam- not finding fault on others
13. Bhuteshu dayaa – looking to welfare of others
14. Aloluptum – detached from material pleasures
15. Mardavam – compassion even to those who do harm to you
16. Hri – one who avoids doing bad karma
17. Achaapalam – steadfastness
18. Teja – radiance
19. Kshama- forgiveness
20. Dhrti  - hating others
21. Natimanitaa – not having pride
 Bhavanti samapdam daivim – these are the qualities that make one divine character. Sri Raghavendra Swami possess all these. It is NOT material riches that ‘sampat’ refers to but richness of CHARACTER.


Bhavya swaroopo bhava dukha thoola,
Sanga agni charya sukha dairya shali,
Samastha dushta graham nigraheso,
Durathya yopa plava Sindhu sethu.                                                                                    5

Bhava – samsara
dukha sorrows
thoola - cotton
Sanga – large mass
agni  - fire
charya – burning
sukha – happiness
dairya – courage
shali – he is
Samastha – all
dushta graham – negative impact on life
nigraha isha – the lord in controlling
Durathyaya – unfathomable
upaplava – disturbance
Durathya yopa plova – the ocean of difficulties and adversities that we face in our life
Sindhu sethu – a bridge to crossover                                                                                    

He has a holy personality , who burns away sorrow and misery,
Who looks after welfare of the society and is very courageous,,
Who is capable of destroying the effects of evil planets,
And who is like the bridge built to cross the ocean of misery.

Nirastha dhosho niravadhya vesha,
Prathyarthi mookhtwa nidhana bhasha,
Vidhwath parigneya maha visesho,
Vakvaikari nirjjatha bhavya sesha.     6

niravadhya – praiseworthy

Prathi – against
prathiyarthi – opponent who comes for debatex
mookhtwa – silence
nidhana bhasha – capable of silencing the opponent who com to debate him
Vidhwath – scholar
parigneya – to be recognized by all (gna – to know, Gneya – know by)
 maha visesho – great quallities
Vak – speech
Vaikari – skill
nirjjatha – defeated
bhavya – excellent
sesha - sheshatheerta                                                                                 

He does not have any thing bad in him and appears fully praiseworthy,
Who by his firm and thoughtful words silences others in argument,
Whose greatness can be full known to only learned people,

And who has conquered pandit by name ‘sheshatheertha’ by his mastery of words.


Santhana sampath parishuddha bhakthi,
Vignana vag deha supata vadhin,
Hathwa sarerothdha samastha doshan,
Dathwa sa no avyadh Guru Raghavendra.                                                                       7

sampath – wealth (not just material wealth but also knowledge)
parishuddha bhakthi – pure devotion
Vignana – special knowledge (vishesha gnana)
Vak – speech
deha – body
supata – strength 
aadhin – etc (et cetera)
Hathwa – eliminating
Sarerothdha – arising from the body
samastha doshan – all the flaws
Dathwa – giving
Sa – that (Guru Raghavendra)
Avyadh - protect

Let the Guru Raghavendra grant me, children, wealth and devotion,
Special knowledge ,  health and skills with words,
Giving us freedom from all the ills of our body,
And also destroy bad effects from all the diseases.

Yad padodhaka sanchaya sura nadhi mukhya paga sadhitha,
Asankhya anuthama punya sankha vilasad prakhata punyavaha,
Dus thapa thraya nasano bhuvi maha vandhyaya suputhra pradho,
Vyanga swanga samrudhidho graha  maha papa hastham shraye.                                      8

The collection of water that washes your feet which helps us to attain all desires,
Which brings unmeasurable, unsurpassed , illustrious and famous blessings
Which destroys the three types of miseries, blesses with good son saluted by the world,
To the elegant one deprived of them earlier and also destroys the bad effects of planets.

Who is drunk with the honey extracted from his lotus like feet,
And who understands and sings the praise of his lotus like feet,
Is the fast spreading fire which destroys our miseries.

Aparokshi krutha shreesa samupekshitha bhavaja,
Apekshitha pradhat anyo raghavendranna vidhyathe.                                                     13

bhavaja – evil desires arising out of mind

There is no one like Guru Raghavendra,
Who has directly seen the consort of Lakshmi,
Who has discarded all bad desires,
And who grants us all that we desire.

Daya dakshinya vairagya, vak patava mukha athi,
Shapanugraha sakthanyo raghavendranna vidhyathe.                                                     14

There is no one like Guru Raghavendra,
Who is merciful, straight forward and detached,
Who adorns himself with mastery of words,

And who is capable of cursing as well as blessing.

Agnana vismrithi bhranthi samashyapasmriti kshaya,
Thanthra kampa vacha kountya mukha ye chendriyongava,
Doshasthe nasa mayanthi Raghavendra prasadatha.                                                 15

kshaya – to destroy
Thanthra – lethargy
 kampa vacha – stammering or shaking speech
 kountya – foolishness

Raghavendra prasadatha – from the grace of  Shri Raghavendra                                               

With the blessings of Guru Raghavendra , ignorance,
Forgetfulness, misunderstanding , doubts , decay of sense,
Lethargy , shaking , stammering would disappear from all organs.,

“ Sri Raghavendraya nama” ihyashtakshara manthratha,
Japithad bhavitha nithyam, ishartha syur na samshaya.                                     16

 druvam – there is about doubt in this   

If this prayer  is chanted before the Brindavana of the Guru,
And a light is lit , definitely become wise and also get a son.

Paravadhi jayo divya jnana bhakthya yadhi vardhanam,
Sarvabhishta pravrudhisyannathra karya navicharana.                                                29

jnana – knowledge
 bhakthi – devotion
adhi – etc
vardhanam - growth
Sarva – all
Abhishta – that we desire
Pravrudhi – real growth
Syat – will happen
athra karya – here, in this respect ‘
navicharana – no need to worry

He would get victory over those who argue with him,
Get divine knowledge and his devotion will increase,
And he not get worried about any thing in life,

Because all this desires would be fulfilled.
