SHRI DURGA STOTRA - PART 2


Krishnacha visamaa krishnaa sankarshana samanana
Vibhrathi vipulou baahu saakra dwaja samuchrayou. ||
10 ||

krishnaa - black
samanana - like
Kundalabhyaamm – ear ring
suprnaabhyaamm - pretty
karnaabhyam - ear
vibhooshithaa - decorated
Bibhrathi –have
vipulou – long
baahu - arms
saakra - strong
dwaja – flag
samuchrayou – rise/grow 


Though black like Krishnayou have a pretty face like Sankarshana. 
Your two very long arms look like couple of flag poles of Indra.

Pathri cha pankaji ghnti sthree vishuddhacha yaa bhuvi, 
Pasam dhanr maha chakram vividha anya aayudhani cha. ||
11 ||

cha – and
pankaji - lotus
ghnti – bell
sthree- woman
vishuddhacha – pure
yaa  bhuvi – this earth 
Pasam – cord or noose
dhanr – bow
maha chakram – wheel
vividha – several
anya – others
aayudhani - weapons 




In the other arms you bear vessel, lotus, bell, noose, bow, 
Wheel and other weapons and you are the purest woman in this earth, And you wear ear rings which increases your prettiness considerably. 
Kundalabhyaamm suprnaabhyaamm karnaabhyam cha vibhooshithaa,
Chandra vispardheena devi mukhena tvam virajase. ||
12 ||

Kundalabhyaamm – ear lobes
suprnaabhyaamm -  beautiful
karnaabhyam - ear
cha - and
 vibhooshithaa - wear
Chandra – moon
vispardheena – contest for superiority
mukhena - face
tvam - your
virajase - shining

And you wear ear globes which increases your prettiness considerably.
Oh Goddess your face competes for prettiness with the moon.

Mukutena vichithrena kesa bhandhena shobhinaa, 
Bhujanga bhoga
 vaasena sreni suthrena raajathaa.  || 13 ||

kesa bhandhena – braid
shobhinaa –beautiful
Bhujanga - snake
vaasena – abode of woman
sroni - waist
suthrena – thread/belt
raajathaa – shine

With a crown and with peculiarly made up braid you look like a snake and shine, And you with your very pretty waist belt.
 
Vibhrajase chabaddhenabhogenevehamandhara. 
Dwajena shiki picchana muchruthena virajase.  || 14 ||

Vibhrajase - shining
baddhena - tie
bhogeneveh - snake
mandhara - mountain
Dwajena - flag
shiki - peacock
picchana – wing
muchruthena – be free
 virajase – shine

You shine like the mountain mandhara tied by a snake.
The flag with the symbol of peacock shines on the sky.

Mahishasura nasini

Kaumaram vruthamasthaya tridivam pavitham thwaya,
Thena thwam sthooyase devi tridasai poojyase api cha. || 15 ||

Kaumaram - maiden
vrutha - penance
tridivam – 3 worlds
pavitham – sacred
thwaya – you
Thena – now/toay
thwam - you
sthooyase – sung/praised
tridasai - trinity
poojyase - worshipped
api – even
 
You who have adopted the penance of maiden hood, 
Have made all the three worlds as sanctified. You were sung about and worshipped by the trinity even today.

Tri lokya rakshanartham Mahishasura nasini,
Prasanna may sura sreshte dayaam kuru shivaa bhava. ||
16 ||

Tri lokya – three worlds
rakshanartham - protecting
Mahishasura – demon mahisha
Nasini - destroy
Prasanna - joyful
 may – for me
sura - devas
sreshte – greatest 
dayaam - kindness
guru – wife of
shivaa bhava – deity shiva

For protecting all the three worlds by filling Mahishasura, 
You who are joyful and the greatest among devas, 
Please show kindness to me as you are the consort of 
Shiva. 

Jayaa thwam vijayaa chaiva sangrame cha jayapradha, 
Mamaapi vijayam 
dehi varada thwam cha sampratham. . || 17 ||

vijayaa - victory
chaiva – as well
sangrame - war
jaya – victory
pradha - grant 
Mamaapi- me also
vijayam – victory
dehi – give
varada – bless
thwam –you
cha - and
sampratham - immediately 

Because you always win over wars , you are Jaya as well as Vijaya, 
Please grant me victory immediately Oh goddess who blesses. 

Vindhye chaiva naga sreshte thava sthanam hi saswatham, 
Kali Kali Maha kali Gadga gadwanga dharini.  ||
18 ||

Chaiva – and also
 naga - mountain
sreshte - greatest
thava - you
sthanam  - house
hi - for
saswatham – permanently
Kali – black
 Kali – time
 Maha kali – great kali
 khaDga -  sword
gadwanga  - sickle
dharini – armed  

You permanently live in Vindhya which is the greatest mountain. You are black, personification of time and the great Kali, Who is armed with a sword and a sickle.

SHRI DURGA STOTRA - PART 4 (Final part)


The following verses are spoken by Durga devi giving darshan to them.
Devyuvacha:- 
Devi told:- 
Upagamyatu rajaanam idam vacanambravit,
Srunu raja mahabaho madyam vacanam prabo.  || 28 ||

Upagamyatu – appear
rajaanam – royal family
idam - this
vacanabravit - speak
Srunu - listen
raja - king
mahabaho – mighty armed
madyam – mine
vacanam – speech
prabo – master

 Durga devi appeared in front of pandvas belonging to royal family. O prabho, O mighty armed  king, listen to this speech of mine.

Bhavishya ciradeva samgrame vijayastava
Mama prasidanirjitya hatva kaurava vahinim. || 29 ||

Bhavishya - soon
cira – long life
deva – king
samgrame - war
vijaya – victory
stava  - praise
Mama - my
Prasida - grace
Nirjitya - conquer
hatva – remove
kaurava - Kauravas
vahinim –  battalion

Having defeated and slain the ranks of the Kauravas through my grace, victory in the battle will soon be yours. And they who also praise me, through my grace I bestow them long life, remove their sins an gratify.

Rajayam nishkamtakam krutva bokshyase medinim punah
Bratrubih sahito rajam pritim prapsyasi pushkalam. || 30 ||

Rajayam – kingdom
Nishkamtakam – thorns-less
krutva  - having
bokshyase  - ruler
medinim  - earth
punah - again
Bratrubih  - brother
sahito – accompanied
rajam - king
pritim – happiness
prapsyasi - reach
pushkalam - strong

O king, you shall also, with your brothers obtain happiness. You shall again lord the entire Earth, having made your kingdom thorn less (free from enemies) and strong.

matprasadacca te saukyamarogyam ca bavishyati,
Ye cha sanmkeerthayishyanthi loke vigatha kalmashaa  || 31 || 

matprasadacca - satisfy
te - they
saukyam - wealth
arogyam - health
bavishya – future
Ye - whoever
cha - and
sanmkirta - praise 
ishyanthi -  desire
loke – people
vigatha – gone away
 kalmashaa - sinful

I would be satisfied to give them wealth, health and desired future. To those people who sing this and live without deceit and sin. 



Theshaam thushtaa pradhaasyaami rajya mayur vapu,
Pravasenagare chapi sangrame Shathru sankate || 32 || 

Theshaam - their    
Thushtaa - satisfied
pradhaasyaami -  prayer
rajyam – kingdom
ayurvapu – provide
Pravase – journey/travel
nagare – town
api – even
sangrame - war
Shathru - enemies
Sankate - danger

And to those who sing this prayer as was done by you, 
Even if they are in between travel or in town or in war or amidst enemies.

Atavyaam durga kaanthaare sagare gahane girou, 
Ye smarishyanti mAm rajan yathaham bavathaa smrutha. ||
33 || 

Atavyaam  -  forest
kaanthaare - thorns
sagare - ocean
gahane - deep
girou - mountain
Ye -
who
smarishyanti - think
mAm - me
rajan - king
yathaham - appear
bavathaa -  your
smrutha - remember

Or in forest with thorns, or in deep ocean or high mountain, 
And then remember me, Oh king, I would appear as soon as they think about me. 

Na thesham durlabam  kinchid asmim loke bhavishyathi, 
Idham stotra
 varam bhakthyaa srunyad vaa padeth vaa || 34 ||

durlabam – difficult to attain

asmim  -  am
loke - world
bhavishyathi – it will be  
Idham -
this

varam - boon
bhakthyaa -  devotion
srunyad - hear
vaa – you (respect)

There is nothing in this world that they cannot be got
by reading or hearing this great prayer with devotion.

Thasya sarvaani karyaani sidhim yasyanthi pandava, 
Math prasadachha ya sarvaan virata nagare sthithaan. ||
35 ||

Thasya – his/her
sarvaani - all
karyaani - work
sidhim - success
yasyanthi – hard work
pandava – son of Pandu
Math – 
me
prasadachha - grace
ya sarvaan - all
virata - Virata
nagare - city
sthithaan - protect

Due to my grace all the people of the city of Virata 
Would meet success in all their endeavors, Oh son of Pandu. 

Ithykthwa varada devi yudhishtra marindhamam, 
Rakshaam kruthwaa cha pandunaam thathrai vanthar dheeyatha. ||
36 || 

Ithykthwa – so said
varada – answer for prayers
marindhamam – victorious
Rakshaam -
protect
kruthwaa – having one
cha – and
pandunaam -  son of Pandu
thathrai – in that place/ there
vanthar – enjoy/owner
dheeyatha - disappeared

After telling like this and blessing Yudhishtra after assuring him, About looking after the interests of the sons of Pandu , she
disappeared.

SHRI DURGA STOTRA - PART 3


Kruthanuyathraa bhoothaisthvam varada kamacharini, 
Bhravathare ye cha thwaam samsmarishyanthi maanavaa ||
19 ||

Kruthanuyathraa – accompanied by
Bhoothaisthvam –residing in all living beings
 varada – boon
kamacharini – moving with
Bhravathare –  reducing
thwaam – you
samsmarishyanthi – remember
 maanavaa – human/man

You who goes to all places to give boons to all beings who pray you. For reducing the burden of the earth, men remember you. 

Pranamanthi cha ye thwaam hi prabhathe thu naraa bhuvi, 
Na thesham durlabham kinchithputrato dhanatho api vaa. ||
20 ||

Pranamanthi - salute
thwaam - you
hi – for
prabhathe – day break
thu – and
naraa – human beings
bhuvi -earth
Na – never
thesham - their
durlabham – scarcity
kinchith – little
putrato - children
dhanatho - wealth
api – also
vaa – you (respectfully addressing) 

The human beings of this earth salute you at day break, 
And they will never ever feel scarcity of children or wealth. 

Durgaath tharayase durge thath thwam Durgaa smruthaa janai, 
Kanthreshwa vasannaanam magnanaam cha Maharnave. ||
21 ||

Durgaath - difficulties
Tharayase – easily pass through
thath – that  
thwam - you
smruthaa - remember
janai – generate/create 
Kanthreshwa - wilderness
vasannaanam – people
 magnanaam - sunk
 Maharnave – deep sea

Because you help people cross the mountain of difficulties, 
Whether in the deep sea or lost in wilderness, people remember you as 
Durga.

Dasyubhirva niruddhhanam thwam gathi paramaa nrunaam, 
Jala pratharane chaiva kanthare ashvataveeshu cha. ||
22 ||

Dasyubhirva debase people
 niruddhhanam – attacked
thwam  - you
gathi  - refuge
paramaa - supreme
 runaam - guilty
Jala – sea or river
pratharane  - crossing
chaiva – and also
kanthare - wilderness
shvataveeshu - powerful

When attacked by debased people or trying to cross sea or river, 
Or Lost completely in wilderness, people only take refuge in you. 

Ye smaranthi maha devi na cha seedhanthi they naraa, 
Thwam keerthi shri dhruthi sidhreerhweer vidhyaa santhathar mathi. ||
23 ||

 maha devi – great goddess
 na - never
seedhanthi - left
they - protect
naraa - people
Thwam  -you
keerthi - fame
 shri - wealth
 dhruthi - satsfaction
sidhreerhweer - humility
vidhyaa – wisdom
santhathar – children
 mathi - intellect

Those who remember you great goddess, are the people who are never left out.For you are fame , wealth , satisfaction, humility . wisdom, children and intellect.

Sandhyaa Rathri prabhaa nidhraa jyothsnaa kanthi kshama dhaya, 
Nranam cha bandhanam moham putra nasam 
dhana kshayam || 24 ||

Sandhyaa – dawn
Rathri - dusk
Prabhaa  –  light
nidhraa – sleep
jyothsnaa- moon light
kanthi –sun
kshama – patient
dhaya - mercy 
nrumna -  courage
bandhanam – fetter/ bonds
moham -  delusion
puthra – son
nasam – death
dhana  - wealth
kshayam – free

You are dawn dusk, light, sleep, lights of sun and moon, patience, mercy. You free people from fetters, gain courage, remove their delusion avoid death of son as well as the loss of wealth. 


Vyadhim mruthyum bhayam chaiva poojithaa nasayishyathi, 
So aham rajyath pari brushta saranam thwaam prapannavaan. ||
25 ||

mruthyum – death
bhayam  - fear
chaiva – and
 poojithaa – worship
 nashaa – remove/destroy
yishyathi -  cure
aham - I
 rajyath - kingdom
paribrashtah – thrown
 saranam – surrender
thwaam – you
prapannavaan – shelter
 
You cure diseases and avoid fear for death for the people who 
worship you. And I having been thrown out from my kingdom,  surrender to you completely. 

Pranathascha yadhaa moordhnaa thava devi sureswari , 
Thrahi maam Padma pathrakshi sathye sathyaa bhavasyanah ||
26 ||

yadhaa - before
moordhnaa - head
thava - your
devi - goddess
sureshwari – god of devas 
Thrahi - help
maam - me
Padma – lotus
pathrakshi – leaves
sathye - truth
bhavasyanah - power


Oh Goddess who is the God of all devas , I bend my head before you.  Please save me Goddess with eyes like lotus leaves, 
Oh goddess, who is truth, prove to me that your power is the truth. 

Saranam bhava durge saranye bhaktha vathsale, 
Yevham sthuthaa hi saa devi darsayamasa pandavam.
 || 27 ||

Saranam – surrender
bhava - love
durge –  Lord durga
saranye - shelter
bhaktha –  devotee
vathsale – faithful to
Yevam – as a result
sthuthaa - prayer
hi - do
saa – he
devi - goddess
darsayamasa – came before
pandavam - pandus 

I surrender to you Oh Durga who loves devotees who surrender to her. And as a result of this prayer The goddess came before the son of Pandu.
