SHRI DURGA STOTRA - PART 3


Kruthanuyathraa bhoothaisthvam varada kamacharini, 
Bhravathare ye cha thwaam samsmarishyanthi maanavaa ||
19 ||

Kruthanuyathraa – accompanied by
Bhoothaisthvam –residing in all living beings
 varada – boon
kamacharini – moving with
Bhravathare –  reducing
thwaam – you
samsmarishyanthi – remember
 maanavaa – human/man

You who goes to all places to give boons to all beings who pray you. For reducing the burden of the earth, men remember you. 

Pranamanthi cha ye thwaam hi prabhathe thu naraa bhuvi, 
Na thesham durlabham kinchithputrato dhanatho api vaa. ||

thwaam - you
hi – for
prabhathe – day break
thu – and
naraa – human beings
bhuvi -earth
Na – never
thesham - their
durlabham – scarcity
kinchith – little
putrato - children
dhanatho - wealth
api – also
vaa – you (respectfully addressing) 

The human beings of this earth salute you at day break, 
And they will never ever feel scarcity of children or wealth. 

Durgaath tharayase durge thath thwam Durgaa smruthaa janai, 
Kanthreshwa vasannaanam magnanaam cha Maharnave. ||

Durgaath - difficulties
Tharayase – easily pass through
thath – that  
thwam - you
smruthaa - remember
janai – generate/create 
Kanthreshwa - wilderness
vasannaanam – people
 magnanaam - sunk
 Maharnave – deep sea

Because you help people cross the mountain of difficulties, 
Whether in the deep sea or lost in wilderness, people remember you as 
Durga.

Dasyubhirva niruddhhanam thwam gathi paramaa nrunaam, 
Jala pratharane chaiva kanthare ashvataveeshu cha. ||
22 ||

Dasyubhirva debase people
 niruddhhanam – attacked
thwam  - you
gathi  - refuge
paramaa - supreme
 runaam - guilty
Jala – sea or river
pratharane  - crossing
chaiva – and also
kanthare - wilderness
shvataveeshu - powerful

When attacked by debased people or trying to cross sea or river, 
Or Lost completely in wilderness, people only take refuge in you. 

Ye smaranthi maha devi na cha seedhanthi they naraa, 
Thwam keerthi shri dhruthi sidhreerhweer vidhyaa santhathar mathi. ||

Smaranthi - remember
 maha devi – great goddess
 na - never
seedhanthi - left
they - protect
naraa - people
Thwam  -you
keerthi - fame
 shri - wealth
 dhruthi - satsfaction
sidhreerhweer - humility
vidhyaa – wisdom
santhathar – children
 mathi - intellect

Those who remember you great goddess, are the people who are never left out.For you are fame , wealth , satisfaction, humility . wisdom, children and intellect.

Sandhyaa Rathri prabhaa nidhraa jyothsnaa kanthi kshama dhaya, 
Nranam cha bandhanam moham putra nasam 
dhana kshayam || 24 ||

Rathri - dusk
Prabhaa  –  light
nidhraa – sleep
jyothsnaa- moon light
kanthi –sun
kshama – patient
dhaya - mercy 
nrumna -  courage
bandhanam – fetter/ bonds
moham -  delusion
puthra – son
nasam – death
dhana  - wealth
kshayam – free

You are dawn dusk, light, sleep, lights of sun and moon, patience, mercy. You free people from fetters, gain courage, remove their delusion avoid death of son as well as the loss of wealth. 


Vyadhim mruthyum bhayam chaiva poojithaa nasayishyathi, 
So aham rajyath pari brushta saranam thwaam prapannavaan. ||

chaiva – and
 poojithaa – worship
 nashaa – remove/destroy
yishyathi -  cure
aham - I
 rajyath - kingdom
paribrashtah – thrown
 saranam – surrender
thwaam – you
prapannavaan – shelter
 
You cure diseases and avoid fear for death for the people who 
worship you. And I having been thrown out from my kingdom,  surrender to you completely. 

Pranathascha yadhaa moordhnaa thava devi sureswari , 
Thrahi maam Padma pathrakshi sathye sathyaa bhavasyanah ||
26 ||

devi - goddess
sureshwari – god of devas 
Thrahi - help
maam - me
Padma – lotus
pathrakshi – leaves
sathye - truth
bhavasyanah - power


Oh Goddess who is the God of all devas , I bend my head before you.  Please save me Goddess with eyes like lotus leaves, 
Oh goddess, who is truth, prove to me that your power is the truth. 

Saranam bhava durge saranye bhaktha vathsale, 
Yevham sthuthaa hi saa devi darsayamasa pandavam.
 || 27 ||

saranye - shelter
bhaktha –  devotee
vathsale – faithful to
Yevam – as a result
sthuthaa - prayer
hi - do
saa – he
devi - goddess
darsayamasa – came before
pandavam - pandus 

I surrender to you Oh Durga who loves devotees who surrender to her. And as a result of this prayer The goddess came before the son of Pandu.

SHRI DURGA STOTRA - PART 1

manasA – whole heartedly
dEvlm – goddess

triBuvanESvarlm   - mistress of the world

King Yudhishthira, praises the glories of Goddess Durga whole heartedly, after arriving the pleasant city of Virata. She is the most powerful and mistress of the world, who is also sister of the great Shri Krishna.

Yasoda Garbha sambhoothaam, Narayana vara priyaam, 
Nanda gopa kule jaathaam , Mangalya kula vardhaneem.  ||

Yasoda garba – Yoshoda’s womb
Sambhoothaam – born
Narayana vara – boon of Lord Narayana
 Priyaam – like
 kula – family/clan
mangalya kula – auspicious family
vardhaneem – increase

She who was born to Yasoda , She who likes boons of Narayana, She who was born in the clan of Nanda gopa, 
She who increases auspiciousness , as well as our family. 

Kamsa vidhravanakarim , asuraanaam kshayamkarim, 
Shilaathata vinikshiptham , aakaasaam prathi gaminim
.  || 3 ||
vidhravanakarim – agitate / fear
kshayamkarim - destroy
Shilaathata – stone
vinikshiptham – thrown/ dashed
aakaasaam – sky
prathi – rose up
 gaminim - reach 

She caused fear to Kamsa, She who destroyed Asuras, 
She who rose up when dashed on 
a stone and went up the sky. 
Vasudevasya bhagineem , divya mala vibhooshithaam, 
Divyambara dharam devim , khadga ketaka dharinim. ||
 4 ||

 vibhooshithaam – wears/ decorated 
Divyambara dharam – wear auspicious
 khadga- sword 
ketaka -sheild 

She who is sister of  Krishna, She who wore auspicious garlands,the goddess who wore auspicious silk cloths, 
She who is armed with 
a sword and a shield. 

Bharavatharane punye ye smaranthi sadashivaam, 
Thaan vai tharayase paapaath pankhe gamiva durbhalaam. ||
 5 ||

Ye- whoever
smaranthi – meditate
Tharayase – easily pass through/rescue
paapaath – sin
pankhe – swamp/ mire
gamiva - cow 
durbhalaam – weak

The holy one , who reduces burden of earth, and to those who meditate on Shiva, Who rescues us from sin, similar to rescuing of a weak cow from mire.

I worship you, give us darshan and make us able defeat the army of foes. I salute you kamashi devi with my younger brothers.

She who has four hands , four faces, round hips carrying her bosoms,  She who wears peacock feathers crown and bracelets, 

 Bhasi devi yadha Padma narayana parigraha. 
Swaroopam Brahmacharye cha visadham Gaganeswari*

Padma – lotus
Parigraha – consort/ wife 
Swaroopam  - form 
Brahmacharye – pure
tava grhe – in your house(sky)
Cha –and
Visadham – give up/control  
Gaganeswari – God of sky

She who shines as Padma, the consort of Lord Narayana. Oh God of the sky, your form is pure and celibate, 
Though black like 
Krishnayou have a pretty face like Sankarshana. 
(* In few texts gaganeswari (gagana – sky) is given as tava kechari – your house )
